Sleight of Hand An Amber Farrell Novel Bite Back Book 1 edition by Mark Henwick Lauren Sweet Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Very well written and edited, as well an imaginative new take on an old subject. I enjoyed the book so much that when I finished I immediately went searching for more books by Mark Henwick. I was shocked to find that he only had one other published book at the time (Hidden Trump) and that 'Sleight Of Hand' was his first published book. That made the quality of the writing and editing even more impressive, IMO. Since then I have read every word Mark has published and have even signed up on his website for updates and serials. That's something I have only done with a very few other authors. I have enjoyed his writing so much that even though I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription, I have purchased everything he has published as of June 2017 and am eagerly awaiting his next release.

Sleight of Hand An Amber Farrell Novel Bite Back Book 1 edition by Mark Henwick Lauren Sweet Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This is the first series where once I read the first book, I could not stop. Such a delight to dive into a well written and imaginative series. The writer creates a real world for the reader to explore.
A joy to read...

The story is exciting with numerous plot twists.
A young woman exploring four different cultures, their history, rules and customs. Exploring and growing on her own path as well as striving for fairness and justice for all.

In most books I have difficulty understanding the complex twists of political machinations. Mark Henwick does a great job of winding and then unwinding the political threads in his books.

The characters are fascinating. They are three dimensional.
All the characters have their own flavor, their strengths and weaknesses.

The editing is well done. The author has made a sincere effort to proofread and beta read each book before publishing.
The continuity between books is very good.

Suggestion
I suggest you read the books in order. There are numerous plots and subplots and they are difficult to understand if you don't know the history of the characters and their development.
First of all, this book has one of pet peeves, it is listed as "Book 1" without a "Book 2" being available as of yet. Still, although I find that irritating, it isn't a deal-breaker for me and doesn't warrent deducting a star.

This book is a breath of fresh air for "Urban Fantasy" fans such as myself. We've gone back to the basics. Instead of having a female character who magically attracts everything with a Y chromosome within a hundred miles and spends her time trying to decide which of them she's going to sleep with tonight and which she's going to string along for another night, we're focusing on a strong character complete with a strong back story who is simply trying to get the bills paid without violating her own sense of ethics too much.

Amber is a military veteran who's been discharged (sort of) as a "national security risk" because she might be turning into a vampire. I say she was "sort of" discharged because she is actually still working for the military and tasked with gathering intelligence on the "supernatural community" that has gotten the attention of the US government. She's an ex-policemen who left the department (sort of) as a rookie because she was starting to attract too much attention. I say she "sort of" left the department because they still depend on her to come to their aid when things begin looking "weird". Now she makes her living as a Private Detective because that's pretty much the only kind of job she can have that won't interfere with everything the federal, state, and local governments are demanding of her.

With all that on her shoulders, you really wouldn't blame her if she became a whiny character every now and then, but the amazing thing is that she doesn't. Sure, the situation scares the bejeezus out of her, her top two fears being finally becoming a full-fledged, blood-sucking vampire and the government coming back and dragging her back to the laboratory and treating her as a labrat once again. Still, she doesn't let those fears slow her down and, although they are a constant worry, she's able to put them aside and get down to work.

This story is a straight-up Urban Fantasy detective novel written rather more believably than most. When things get too complicated, Amber sees no problem with reccomending her client hires another agency to take up the slack. The "case" is actually three different, but interlinked, cases and Amber is tasked with solving all three for her client without anybody, especially the press, ever learning anything is wrong. Amber is forced to juggle so many things at once, including a former client unsatisfied with the conclusion of the job trying to make life as difficult as possible for our heroine, that I was frankly amazed the author was able to keep the story a smooth and effortless read.
