if you like mystery/thriller novels with some darkness to them, this book is for you. The characters are haunted by Persephone’s unsolved murder, and Megan Collins expertly captured how grief and a lack of closure effect people in so many different ways. There are quite a few twists and turns, leaving me guessing almost all the way to the end. Ms. Collins has a great gift for writing, and her prose hums with her talent on every page. If her debut novel is this good, I can’t wait to see where she goes from here.

A wonderful debut mystery, this one grabbed me from the get go. Sylvie’s sister died in high school and she carries the guilt of her role in the death around like a stone around her neck. Years later, her mother, who had depression issues even before her sister’s death, is an alcoholic dying of cancer. Sylvie returns home to take care of her mother.

Sylvie is a wonderful character. I loved that after college she became a tattoo artist. “It was creative, it required thought and skill, and it generated a considerable feeling of power; the tattoo artist, I soon learned, was not only the inflictor of pain, the drawer of blood, but also, on a good day, the fulfiller of dreams.” And I could totally relate to her. Her mom hasn’t been a mother to her, yet it still falls to her to return home and take care of her. I totally get that guilt, that sense of forced obligation. And the secrets! Sylvie knows nothing of her mom’s history.

The writing here is gorgeous, not at all typical for a psychological thriller. “She was a different person - no longer the sun, as shed once seemed, but a cloud, one that always held the threat of a storm, and I knew very well how much it hurt to love somebody like that.”

And the tension here is perfect. I kept finding an excuse to read one more chapter, just to see what the next twist would be. There’s lots going on here -all the lies, the guilt, the overwhelming grief. This book totally gets how we can make mistakes when we’re too young to know better, but still find it so hard to forgive ourselves.

The mystery is easier to suss out than some. But this book is really about the emotions more than the crime.

My thanks to netgalley and Atria Books for an advance copy of this book.
THE WINTER SISTER, by Megan Collins, reveals Sylvie, a young woman who still haunted by the murder of her sister, Persephone. Sylvie escaped her hometown and her family and her heavy memories, only to be dragged back when her dying mother suddenly needs a caretaker. The more Sylvie is home and the more people she finds from her past, the more she believes that his sister's murder did not happen the way she thought it had.
There is a lot of clearly connectable imagery in THE WINTER SISTER. Collins does a good job of connecting images to emotions and then describing those visceral reactions characters have to certain images, as many people do in real life. Collins keeps the characters real; they all possess strengths and weaknesses and make good and bad choices. A fascinating approach to portraying the murdered sister, Persephone, is that the reader's perception of her vacillates from beautiful and pure, to dark and damaged and everywhere in between. It's a rollercoaster of a ride, with it ending somewhere in the middle, but I found it uniquely enjoyable. The plot progresses nicely and gains momentum, but he ending is fairly predictable and once the big reveal happens, there really isn't any more twists and turn, it just feels like going through the motions to finish the book.
I read THE WINTER SISTER quickly and I think reading this book fast is best because the emotionally heightened feelings don't have a chance to whither away. I found the book a haunting and enjoyable mystery to check out.
Thank you to Touchstone/Atria Books, Megan Collins, and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I had the killer pegged early on in this book. Despite this fact, there were pieces of the puzzle I still needed answered.
I kept planning to put it down after the current chapter, and then realizing I was already halfway through the following chapter. It's that kind of page-turner. Also the characters are very multi-dimensional, and their conversations are subtly complex. What a great read!
This book was hard to put down.
From the first sentence, I was hooked! It kept me thinking, trying to figure out before turning the page, what would happen next, and who was responsible. I'm a slow reader, and finished the book in three days. Honestly, I wished there was more!
I absolutely loved The Winter Sister and only put it down begrudgingly. A compelling reimagining of the myth of Persephone and Demeter is the foundation of the novel, yet the plot is pure suspense. The characters, especially Sylvie, are fleshed out. And it might be the language itself, poetic and beautiful, that is the most impressive thing about this novel. This is an incredibly promising debut novel.
