The Golf Mystic is an allegorical presentation of everyday life through golf perspectives. It is a story, an instruction book, an inspirational philosophy for golf and life. Written in conversational style, it is the story of the wayward golf pro (Geoff) who realizes he is failing in the most important parts of his life. His golf career is in disarray and his fiancé, Claire has recently left him. Geoff is about ready to give up on the game when he encounters an obscure iconoclastic golfer and teacher in the person of Joe Burlington.
While mainstream golf teaching pros have rejected this master, a desperate Geoff is inspired and seeks Joe out for help. After an inauspicious start, Geoff comes to understand that Joe is a rare and special teacher, solidly grounded and uncorrupted by the technical trends and material culture in modern golf and the world at large. His simple sage advice and methods of teaching transcend anything Geoff has experienced before. Joe demonstrates how learning to play the game of golf mirrors life. It is all about relationships, and being in the moment. To be successful, one must embody universal principles of freedom and trust. In golf, these qualities must be combined with sound swing strategies.
As Joe’s holistic, yet eccentric approach begins to work magic, Geoff still reserves judgment. He’s been hoodwinked before by slick expert gamesmen with quick fix methods that deluded him into believing he was on the road to success, but ultimately sent him crashing into walls of failure and dead ends. Yet, as Geoff begins to apply Joe’s strategies, he finds that his golf swing takes on the effortless quality absent since he was a young boy. He discovers that Joe is the real deal, imparting wisdom in elegant and simple ways. He soon comes to understand that with Joe’s principles in life, in love, or in golf, one can truly fulfill one’s promise.
Joe’s prescriptive strategies show Geoff how to view things differently. His combination of practical mental and physical exercises create positive change that bring Geoff and the reader closer to success. Throughout his visit, Geoff observes several key golf lessons and learns how incorporating Joe’s strategies can open him up to fulfillment in his golf game, his golf teaching, and his personal life.
Golf Mystic teaches how to blend and balance each moment in life and to understand that peace and joy are based on perspective. Woven through the story is a proven program of swing development that will provide golfers with strategies to overcome any physical or psychological problem they may face in golf. The universal principle is that anyone can achieve his or her potential. Popular traditional and modern techniques that are not sound are systematically debunked as Joe’s unique mentoring technique unfolds.
This unique writing reflects a fresh perspective on life and golf through its use of solid and innovative principles of golf instruction taught with humor, insight, and a significant shift in the paradigm of teaching and learning the game. Whether in or outside the golf community, readers will find the demonstrations and “out of the box” thinking, a meaningful and useful path to transforming past self-defeating thinking and behaviors to new and more productive ways of living, and playing the game.

The author has provided a great and interesting read for everyone, golfers and non-golfers.This book is a great read, I couldn't put it down once I started. Not just a book on golf but much more.
It is written through the eyes of a struggling golfer instructor (trying to find his golf swing, his chase for the perfect swing, and how to fit into the norm of what we consider mainstream golf instruction today) and the impact on his professional and personal life. This book puts a perspective on what golfers today face every time they pick up a golf club.
What is the proper technique, the correct instruction, how to deal with the mental demons of every golf swing, from putting to driver.
This book has a lot of gems on technique, and some may be hard for the beginner to understand but make no mistake, everyone from the golfer just starting out to the seasoned scratch golfer can find something of immense value in this read.
There is great instruction on the takeaway, something that gets lost in most books. If only to get into a great position at the top and set for a great swing "MOTION" this is worth the price of the book. A part of the story deals with the path and how to use a target just behind and outside the the ball to get the hands into the correct path (it really works). The "curl" which explains how and why the club can take an inside path and still square up and compress the ball. What interferes with the forward physics of impact and how to avoid it. A real interesting bit about why most golfers when having a good day with the driver struggle with their irons and vice-verse (you may be surprised at the answer but it lies in the perception of how the driver is hit- level or upward, while the iron are hit with a slightly descending blow and the effects of manipulating the club has on the release).
There is more to the instruction but also of great interest is the effect of your attitude has on your swing (much of which you will find the same in Vision 54, Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, and many other books on mental coaching). The difference is how it is presented in such a way to help the reader relate to his/her own personal life. This is probably as important as all of the technical aspects of the game because it affects how we try to manipulate the club and our bodies in an incorrect effort to generate power, control and accuracy.
The book will change your perception on how you approach not just golf, but the way you visualize the golf swing, how you approach a round of golf, and how you think about each and every golf swing from both a technical and mental aspect.
A fun, fast read. If you take your time through the technical parts you will gain a lot of insight into how to make a great golf motion from start to finish as opposed to swinging through a bunch of positions and losing your natural athletic rhythm. This is the primary reason why too many golfer can't achieve that elusive effortless power.
Lastly, if you take this book to heart you will enjoy golf so much more, no matter how good or bad you play. And if you do you will play so much better and continue to improve because you will play golf and not play the non productive game of "swing".

The Golf Mystic eBook Gary Battersby Reviews
'The Golf Mystic", written by Gray Battersby, who has worked and taught with Bob Toski, has written a captivating book that presents a different approach to teaching golf.
As a frustrated "position oriented" analytical golfer this book presented a welcome new approach that reminded me of the way I played the game when I was a young man. I associated with many of the characters in this book - especially the main character, Joe Burlington.
If you are looking for an interesting read that will, if you are not careful, change the way you play and learn golf, this book is for you.

If you are looking for technical secrets to improving your golf game, this is not the book. Instead, if you are looking for an appropriate approach to enjoying the wonderful journey of golf and life....you in the right place. My feelings in reading this book ranged in the same way as the main character looking for help.......From a feeling of what is this anyway, to eventually of trust and understanding. Should we all be lucky to encounter a coach/mentor like Joe in our golfing life. This book should be the first introduction all aspiring golf instructors should be exposed. As a volunteer coach, my first lesson was always to first like ourself before we could relate or like others. As a CEO, I always tailored my interactions with employees and management to recognize their individual needs to foster their development and skill level. Like the author, I believe the position and method approaches to golf is among the reasons for the general lack of improvement in golf. Tiger Wood, Phil, and other touring professionals would benefit greatly to find a coach like Joe.
As one in my 60's who has taken many lessons and read many books on the golf swing and other related topics, in addition to my subscriptions to "Golf" and "Golf Digest", I was very frustrated by my inability to maintain any consistency with my ball striking. In fact, it seemed that the more I learned about the swing, the worse I played. After reading this book, which I couldn't put down once I started, my enthusiasm for the game has been restored. Yes, I have read other books and articles preaching about keeping negative thoughts from creeping into my head, but this book has many more concepts to apply to your inner self that actually make it easy to relax and let your natural swing flow, tempo and timing take over. It's a paradigm shift in how you approach not just the swing, but the entire game itself. I highly recommend this book be read in concert with "The Keys to an Effortless Golf Swing" by Michael McTeigue. The concepts in both books complement each other amazingly well.
As I have just finished "The Golf Mystic" , I cannot report any dramatic drop in my handicap (9.2), but that's because it's July in Texas and too damn hot for golf! I can report several trips to the range and the short game practice area that have been 100% better than usual. I will update this review as soon as I have tangible results.
