I recently passed the NYSTCE Visual Arts CST with only these flash cards as a review tool. I felt prepared, and I found the flashcards to be a really useful tool to remind myself about different artists, materials, and procedures that would be on the test.PROS:
* You can review for the CST easily and efficiently with these cards. They are portable and easy to carry around in a rubber band.
* The information is more challenging than what you will find on the actual test, so when taking the test you will feel very prepared.
* Cards are organized with a heading, such as "Visual Arts Materials and Processes," "Aesthetic and Interdisciplinary Connections," etc. (The different areas on the test.)
CONS:
* The flashcards come in sheets and you have to punch them out yourself.
* The flashcards have small type and very dense, concentrated information on them.
* The information on the cards looks a little scary because it is so in-depth. Just keep this in mind as you use the cards as a review tool.
* Don't expect flashy or pretty cards with colors or images. These are just text-based cards. (Kind of a bummer for a test about VISUAL ART!)
Overall, this is a great way to review for the Visual Arts CST. A classmate of mine got the cards and the study book by the same company and found having the two materials to be redundant. I recommend getting one or the other (whether you prefer a book style or a flash card style approach).

The materials and process cards are a MUST for this test. There are questions about print making, photo processing, kiln firing and more. All of that is covered in these note cards. They also cover an extensive amount of art history. So glad I used these to study from. There are a lot of cards, but I would look at and learn about 10 a day to break them up. I passed the test on my first attempt, even after identifying the image for the essay wrong because I did such a good job on the multiple choice from these cards. I know people who didn't make this investment and took the test 2 times to pass.
Teacher certification is very important and I wanted to get mine in visual arts. I learned a lot in my own classes and when I was looking forward to the test, I knew I would have to spit a lot of that information back out in the test. How I would remember it all, however, I was unsure. I found these flash cards and was so relieved that they had all of the information on them I needed to know. They were made for teachers who wanted to get certified in visual arts! Since that's me, I grabbed the cards right away and got to work. Better yet, they didn't cost much! But I would have paid a lot more for what they gave me. I really feel like they helped me not only pass the test, but have less nerves leading up to it. When I took the test, I was calm and collected because I knew I studied the right information hard with the help of the flash cards. The cards worked great and I think they are a wonderful addition to any study collection for other teachers who want to get certified in visual arts.
I purchased these flashcards in hopes to pass the Visual Arts CST exam. They did not help me at all. None of the information provided on the cards was on the exam.
Overall, I disliked the NYSTCE Visual Arts Test Flashcard Study System. You have to separate the cards yourself (perforated sheets), and like so many of these test prep guides, you will find blatantly incorrect information provided in these (and if you don't know a significant amount about the visual arts, you will likely be mislearning many aspects). The book compiled by the same company was marginally easier to work through, but less thorough (there are literally paragraphs of information on the backs of these cards) and also contained frequent misinformation. Unfortunately, there are no exceptional options available. For the art history component of the exam, I recommend buying "The Annotated Mona Lisa," by Carol Strickland. To date, I have found no great option for the other exam components.
It's way too much content to study, 91% is not even on the exam. Not the best choice to study for this test...
I purchased the flashcards for convenience of being able to carry them around to study. While the cards are very thorough and packed with information, they were not in fact very relevant to the exam. Only a small portion of the content on the cards was on the exam.
Very helpful. Prepped me for a subject I haven't studied formally in more than 30 years ... and I passed! -)
